A 3-question Slack pulse template for managers

Copy-ready three questions. Skills, collaboration, impact. Send before standup.

Published

You do not need another playbook tonight.

You need something you can send before standup tomorrow. A short Slack pulse. Three questions. About a minute each.

This page is the checklist. If you want the deeper setup story, use the monthly Slack team pulse guide. Here we keep it copy-ready.

Who this is for

Managers of roughly 5 to 50 people on tech or product teams. You already feel when collaboration gets sticky. You do not want a 40-question engagement survey that sits unread for two weeks.

If that sounds like your team, keep reading. If you need the full product walkthrough, jump to the guide and come back for the template later.

The three questions

Rate each on a 1–5 scale.

  1. SkillsDoes the team have what it needs to deliver quality work?
  2. CollaborationIs working together smooth and productive?
  3. ImpactIs the work landing, and are people helping the team move?

That is it. Skills. Collaboration. Impact. Nothing about cafeteria food. Nothing that takes twenty minutes.

These three map to the friction you actually see in 1:1s: missing ownership, messy handoffs, quiet disengagement. You do not need forty Likert items to spot that early.

Cadence checklist

Use this as a monthly checklist:

  • Pick one team (or squad) for this month
  • Send a private link (Slack DM + email), not a channel blast
  • Keep answers anonymous
  • Hide scores until at least 3 people respond (so nobody gets singled out)
  • Close the window after a clear end date (a week is plenty)
  • Read the harmony score the same week
  • Write down one action, not ten

If fewer than three people answer, do not force a score. Wait or nudge once, then close the window. A thin sample is worse than no sample.

What to do with the score

Keep the action list short.

  • Skills low : pair programming, hiring note, or clear ownership gaps

  • Collaboration low : meeting load, handoff friction, or missing context

  • Impact low : priorities unclear, demos missing, or wins not visible

One prompt per weak area is enough. The goal is a conversation this month, not a culture binder.

Bring the score into an existing ritual if you can: standup, retro, or a 15-minute manager sync. Do not invent a new meeting unless you have to.

Copy-paste invite (optional)

Quick monthly pulse (about 1 minute). Three questions on skills, collaboration, and impact. Answers are anonymous. Scores only show after at least 3 people respond.

Paste that into your DM template and attach the private link. Keep the tone light. People skip anything that sounds like a corporate audit.

Common mistakes to skip

  • Blasting the pulse in a public channel
  • Asking ten “just one more” questions
  • Waiting a month to look at results
  • Treating anonymity as optional when the team is small
