What to do after a low team harmony score
Got a low team harmony score? How to read a monthly Slack pulse without panic - and pick one action this week.
Published
A low team harmony score is information. It is not a verdict on you as a manager.
Still, the first reaction is often panic. Or denial. Or a long Slack thread that makes everyone more careful and less honest.
This post is the calmer playbook: how to read the score, what to ignore, and what to do this week.
What the score is (and is not)
A monthly Slack pulse with three ratings - skills, collaboration, impact - gives you a simple team signal. It is not a performance review. It is not a firing document. It is a weather report.
One low month can be noise: vacation week, launch crunch, low response count. Two months of the same soft spot is a pattern.
If you need the how-to for running the pulse, use the template or the guide. This page assumes you already have a score.
Read the three parts separately
Do not only stare at the combined number.
- Skills low usually means ownership gaps, missing pairing, or unclear craft standards.
- Collaboration low usually means handoffs, meeting load, or quiet conflict.
- Impact low usually means priorities are fuzzy or wins are invisible.
Skills high + collaboration low is common. The work can be good while the room feels bad. Treat that as climate, not competence.
One-week action plan
Keep it small.
- Confirm response count (at least three people). Thin samples wait for next month.
- Pick the weakest of the three dimensions.
- Ask one open question in a 1:1: "What is getting in the way?"
- Change one thing: a handoff, a meeting, a demo ritual.
- Write the action down. Revisit next pulse.
Do not launch a culture program off one score. Do not hunt for who rated what.
What not to do
- Do not screenshot scores into a public channel
- Do not mix the pulse with performance ratings the same day
- Do not add ten new survey questions to "explain" the drop
- Do not ignore a second month of the same dip
If leadership asks for a deep dive, give them the trend and the one action. Resist the urge to invent a new dashboard. The point of a light pulse is that it stays light after the score lands, not only before.
Keep the language plain with your team. Fancy labels do not help. Clear next steps do.
